Bad design decisions

Ya know. Studying design is a good idea if you wanna be a designer, but it's certainly not MANDATORY. However, when it comes to looking at your own stuff an be somewhat of a critic, stepping back and asking yourself questions about your work, you should do that. Perhaps not even autonomously, you can ask a fellow designer, or you could ask the guy in accounting. But sometimes I look at stuff and think to myself "what group of people missed that".

I was on Canada411 today and saw something that I can only define as "unreflected". Sure, you wanna experiment with nice sexy wink-to-Bezier shapes while perhaps tugging a little bit at someone's childhood, or even just be "cool". But really, when you're in the neighbourhood of shapes, you might wanna put two and two together before going into high algebra:

Behold, the bomb over the dreaming child crossing the the street. Well done YellowPages, it works because there's yellow IN BOTH!!! That's some serious art direction.

Wheee. Nuke the sidewalk.

You know what's so great about the internet today? You can talk back. There's someone who designed this, and you can just walk up to him virtually, and throw him a virtual brick.
Or tell his boss he's a terrorist, while CCing the canadian equivalent of Homeland. (right. we don't have that)

But anyway.. people react on the net. For some, the signal to noise ratio is just too low, like admins of big online communities.. but I'm pretty sure the "contact us!" button for canada411 is NEVER used, except by granmas that can't find their nephew's phone numbers or some inane shit like that.

I'm pretty sure the webmaster for that site will be ecstatic to have some critical issue to resolve. (ie: send a threat to marketing and copy their boss. They're always stealing lunches in the fridge anyway. Assholes.)

Wow -- that's BAD. And the kid is even mimicking an airplane. AND THEY'RE BOTH YELLOW!

I LOVE this topic. You know which design decision irks *me* out? The terrible cartoonist who does the STM posters. Whenever I'm in the metro/bus, I get angry just looking at those things...
