Look. I was talking to a friend today, and she had never, and I mean never, heard of YouTube. Which pretty much makes that the shortest and best conversation about YouTube that I've ever had, and it kinda made me sad.
But for the rest of us, that is, those of us who make use of this service in the way we see fit, there's an inexhaustible wealth of things to see on youtube. As I explained to my friend, I've watched commercials, vlogs, documentaries, TV clips, commercials, personal rants, parodies, stand up comics, feats of skill, porn, fetish, Music Videos, Japanimation excerpts, longplays, highscores, glitches, speedruns, how-to's and hidden gems. I'd pull my cable out of the wall, but I still need Bravo! and Showcase for my diet to be sustained.
And while talking heads in the new era of Max Headroom seems to constitute the bulk of original content (including incredible flame wars between 15 year old... so fuckin' ugly it makes IRC look like a tupperware party), there is eposodic content on YouTube that is truly epic. While Chad Vader - Dayshift Manager was enjoyable for a few weeks, nothing, at least for me, can topple the reign of the beauty that is: WE NEED GIRLFRIENDS.
Of course, mentionning something to the capacity of "Oh, have you seen We Need Girlfriends?" might get you dumfounded looks in a room on non-viewers, I need not assure you that this is the shit. I've had a habit throughout my life of being overly enthusiastic about things, especially when it comes to Music and Movies, I think I've reached the point where I can be a reliable referrence, at worst. Don't take my blog for it.
For those of you who want to dive in head first, if you're like me and avoid reading any reviews or even the back of the DVD case, then you can start RIGHT HERE
We Need Girlfriends is the quintessential drama of Tom, Henry and Rod, who eventually all find themselves pitting their incorrigible characters towards finding themselves new girlfriends. Chiseling adult characters for a sitcom or series can be pretty straightforward, but writing for young adults is an increasingly difficult task. What 3 archetypes could reach out to teens and adults alike? This is the genius of the series, in fact, you won't find yourself saying the word genius, you actually might use words like "gold", or "classic". Any or all of the three might end up holding a mirror to you, or someone you know. It's not hit or miss. Even then, I'm sure you've watched sitcoms where you can relate to absolutely no character, but you still watch, cause it's damn funny.
WNG is the work of Steven Tsapelas who runs RAGTAG Productions. I'll let you Google the rest, because you will, won't you.
I've seen people type stuff like "I hope this gets picked up by some TV station" or "Somebody should really buy this". I think this is besides the point, which is why I don't think that TV-only watchers are worthy of being piped to just yet. Sure, YouTube will 100% have an on-demand TV feed someday, no sources needed, they just will, it's that simple. But for now, We Need Girlfriends makes getting to know YouTube worth the trot.
Even greater, is WNG's popularization of bands of MySpace. The music is infectious, and will have you looking around, so make sure you pay attention to the credits if you dig it. Let me just get my remote control here and press "embed":
