Sometimes you just type anything and put a ".com" to see where you wind up. Today, I decided to type "belong.com" in my location bar. I usually back out of there once I see that it's a generic placeholder type page. I've never actually looked into how one would proceed to buy the said domain from the parked page, simply because I'm sure it's a lot of money.. but just how much money are we talking about, here?
When you think about it, it's got to be a lot, because the business of made-up-words is the cornerstone of new internet business.. think "kijiji". If you can spend a few days brainstorming with your employees about some made up words, then buying standard english language domains has GOT to be costly to justify your management decision to have grown-ups play scramble-words.
At first glance, it would appear that a company called Sedo would own "belong.com", but it's not the case. Sedo appears to be the "ebay" of domain names, that is, it is a Domain Name Auctioning service. I placed a 1$ bid on belong.com to see what happens: minimum bid is 60USD. But, whatever, there's a lot of available stats to peruse, so I looked around.
After sorting the upcoming domain name auctions for the next few days, it would seem that IRAQ.COM is the hottest domain up for bids right now on Sedo. This is probably not the first time that bidding starts on IRAQ.COM since even at a whopping current bid of 400,000 EUR, the reserve has not yet been met (for those of you who are not familiar with auctions, a "reserve" is a withheld price set by the seller that, if not met, will result in no-sale). If 400,000 Euros is not enough money for a domain name, then you gotta wonder what amount this Sedo user is anticipating, and who they're anticipating it from.
You can tune in and view the auction here
