YouTube day 1: Not so fast.

(...your friend, might be crazy)

Since the theme this week seems to be "giving in to modern trends", I've decided to get a YouTube account, and only one person reading this knows exactly why. No, you won't be seeing my face on there anytime soon, as I can't possibly aspire to more fame and hate than Chad Warden for the time being. Let's let that one cool off.

All internet services look different from the outside, that is: until you get an account and see what's under the hood. Even getting this Blogger account was a blind man's journey, as things should be a bit more descriptive than "get account, write, post", instead of fischer-pricing it for the ever growing neo-digital-consumer users. It's sad that proper documentation is not offered until you become a user, and even then, FAQs are watered down to inquiries from ignorant people, leaving the technically savvy at a loss and mercy of emailing support "the hard way".

So. I had all my stuff ready. I gathered some really obscure and old videoclips from schwag CDs and other media oddities that I've gathered over the years, and plopped em' all nice in a folder like.

I upload my first video, and am REALLY happy to report that YouTube gives you the luxury of an upload progress bar, something that even operating systems have trouble putting in clear view of its users. The video is in, I've revised my description and left all the radio buttons alone to let the system do it's thing. Here's the status of my new vid:

Added: April 02, 2007, 11:05 AM
Broadcast: Public Video | Uploaded (processing, please wait)
Raw File: incitemag_lara.mpg

I'm assuming what's going on here is that there's somekind of processing going on such as scaling the video to the size of the YouTube window and cutting corners on the quality. The scary part, though, is that the running time for the video is indicated as '0:00'. To most of us, this means that the file upload failed, but given the apparent quality of the upload engine, I'm quite sure that it would have reported an error, had it occurred. At best, a 0:00 second video should be processed instantaneously.

Two hours later, the true time of the video is indicated (2:51), but still no snapshot, only an "image coming soon" placeholder, and it's still processing. So, please wait.

A gooooogle search reveals the following on the first (of a disappointingly low 86) hit.

Apparently, I can wait well over 24 hours for a video to be processed. Seems there might be human beings at work in this "process". I guess I'll have to wait for everyone at YouTube to pass my video around the office (oh, I WISH I got that kind of attention) before flippin' the switch. It's understandable, but the fact that this information is not commonplace in articles like the one in Time magazine or so, just goes to show just how much the medium is not discussed when it comes to YouTube, only the message.

YouTuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu(please wait)uuuube.

[Updated: 6 hours later]

The video is finally up. I was more fortunate than those poor souls who had to wait over 24 hours for a post. Here itiz:

Yay -- you're on the Tube! I'm not a big fan of its interface (ooh, ooh, am I using an computer term correctly?), but it gets the job done. I look forward to posting more cool vids...maybe i'll get one of you up there one day... :P

She is probably named in here.

Seems like Lara Weller, but I could be wrong, they all look alike.

Yeah Destoo, you're totally right: Lara Weller. And thanks to your comment, I've found that this video already exists on YouTube. So much for making a contribution..

Redundancy is always appreciated on live video video sites that are live and personnal bloging web log sites, especially if it's redundant enough to be redundant.

I don't know if I feel relieved or just further annoyed upon reading your notes on Youtube upload delays. I've reposted my new video a couple of times today but get the message "Broadcast Public / Failed", not the processing one you mention. This is after different renders of the video a different resolutions/qualities. I think Youtube must live in fear of someone actually figuring out how to contact them directly with questions.
